What the amounts mean
The fund route is classed as "fund" in the route-type column even though the fund itself buys property. The investor holds fund units: the fund must be approved by the Hungarian authorities, must place at least 40% of its capital in Hungarian residential property, and the units must be held for five years1,2. What the investor gets back depends on the fund's performance and its redemption terms, which the programme rules do not fix. The EUR 1,000,000 donation route goes to a public-interest trust supporting higher education and is not returned1.
Until 15 January 2025 a third route existed: the purchase of residential property for at least EUR 500,000. That option was removed on that date, and the dataset records the removal in the change log1,2. A reader who finds the EUR 500,000 figure quoted elsewhere is reading material written before the change.
Stay rules and renewal
The permit is issued for ten years and can be renewed once for a further ten1. No minimum stay applies1. Twenty years of residence rights without a presence requirement is the longest permit term in the dataset, and it comes with the narrowest onward path: the programme records no permanent-residence step and is not a citizenship route1.
Family
The spouse and dependent children may be included1. Parents are not listed, which places Hungary with Latvia and Cyprus at the narrow end of the family scope in the dataset.
Citizenship position
The Guest Investor Programme is not a route to Hungarian citizenship1. The dataset records the position as "not a citizenship route" rather than giving a number of years, because the permit does not feed a naturalisation count in the way a residence permit in Portugal or Italy does.
Where the figures come from
The National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing publishes no consolidated English page for the programme. This row therefore rests on two published statements that agree with each other: an International Bar Association note on the programme's amendments1 and one licensed adviser's guide2. The adviser link is the only one of its kind on this site and is used because it is the clearest English statement of the fund conditions available; the authority's site is linked in the footer for the reader who wants the Hungarian original.
